Virtual Detroit Lab

2024

A multiplayer automotive innovation lab for Epic Games staff and automotive clients, built for training, product demonstrations, and collaborative design sessions.

Project Overview

Epic Games envisioned a virtual alternative to their planned physical Detroit Lab: an automotive-focused innovation lab for meetings, training, product demonstrations, and testing new metaverse technologies, used by both Epic staff and their potential customers.

The lab's design takes cues from real Epic facilities. Distributed teams join the same session from different offices or countries with no travel: a Cyber Hub and meeting rooms support real-time collaboration, while interactive training modules let users experiment with automotive designs in a shared virtual setting. It scales to different group sizes and adapts to new training needs without physical renovation.

My Contribution

Role: Lead Technical Artist.

I built and owned the gameplay and replication framework that powered shared multi-user sessions, interactive training, and collaborative product demonstrations.

Outcome

The Virtual Detroit Lab is now used by Epic Games staff and their automotive clients for training, product demonstrations, and collaborative design sessions, and it is updated with new modules as needs change, without the cost or logistics of maintaining a physical facility.
